MY APPROACH

I’m a geek – I love learning about mental health, understanding how difficulties develop and are maintained, and keeping up to date with CBT. I’m naturally very thorough, so I’ll take the time to really understand what’s going on for you, to inform your treatment options.

I offer a warm yet challenging therapeutic space where you can safely work towards change. I prioritise working collaboratively with you – as a team – to develop a shared understanding of your mental health difficulties, to help you to overcome them. CBT does not involve teaching coping skills, as you can expect to overcome your difficulties through treatment and live life how you would like to, rather than feeling trapped by trying to manage them.

A standard CBT session is 60-minutes in length. 90-minute sessions are recommended for some sessions in a course of therapy, e.g. where the treatment focus is an anxiety disorder, OCD or PTSD. 90-minute sessions can also be booked for individual need, e.g. sensory difficulties, long-term conditions, neurodivergence. (To be discussed and agreed in advance of booking). Sessions are arranged weekly.

DIFFICULTIES I TREAT

  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD);
  • Depression;
  • Dermatillomania (‘skin-picking disorder’);
  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD);
  • Panic disorder;
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD);
  • Social anxiety disorder;
  • Specific phobias; and
  • Trichotillomania (‘hair pulling disorder’).

I have a special interest in treating:

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD); and
  • Agoraphobia.

MY EXPERIENCE

I have over 18 years’ experience in NHS mental health services; assessing and working therapeutically – on a one-to-one basis and delivering groups – with people with mild to moderate, common mental health difficulties including depression, anxiety disorders, OCD and PTSD; as well as severe and enduring, chaotic and challenging difficulties, including Borderline Personality Disorder.

Prior to training to become a psychotherapist my experience was in providing admin support in NHS mental health services giving me a helpful understanding of how NHS systems work. I also volunteered for mental health charities, as a telephone helpline support worker and befriender, and completed honorary work in the NHS including delivering an anxiety management group; these experiences enabled me to support people experiencing mental health difficulties whilst on my journey to pursuing a therapy career.

MY QUALIFICATIONS

  • BSc Psychology;
  • NCFE Level 2 certificate in counselling skills;
  • PGCert Low-Intensity Psychological Therapies; and
  • PGDip High-Intensity Psychological Therapies.

I regularly undertake training courses to continue my professional development. Some of these have included additional training on treating OCD; assessing and supporting those with safety concerns such as self-harm, domestic abuse and suicide; and adapting treatment for people with learning disabilities and autistic people. I’ve also completed training in alternative therapeutic modalities to CBT, including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).
