If you are reading this then I imagine that you are seeking support for either yourself or someone close to you, often that decision to seek help can be the hardest part of the process.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of therapy that has been shown to be effective for many common mental health issues for example; Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Low Self Esteem and many other situation based issues.

CBT works with thoughts, feelings, physical sensations (you know when your tummy drops or the hairs on the back of your neck stand up), behaviour and the relationship between all of those elements. We will look together at what the difficulties are you are experiencing, the changes which can be made, how we go about that and what difference that will make.

We will start by understanding what you are thinking and doing in situations, examining if those are helpful or not and looking for alternatives to what those that are not helpful. Treatment usually involves experimenting with different types of behaviour in the real world, stopping and examining thinking in real time and making changes. This usually involves out of session work (sometimes called homework) as you take what we have learned together in session and apply it to day-to-day life.

I have been in the chair of the client in the past and I have experienced both the struggle before therapy and the difference that good therapy can make. I think this makes me better at my job.

My practice is based at the Victoria Therapy Centre, Saltaire from where I deliver CBT and my tailored group work.

EXPERIENCE

I am an accredited British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) Psychotherapist meaning that I have been formally recognised as meeting the high standards of training and experience in CBT; I can be found on the register on the BABCP website (BABCP reg no 140569). I am also a trained group therapy practitioner and supervisor for other therapists.

Alongside this practice I have also been working within the Increasing Access To Psychology Therapies programme (IAPT NHS project) in various areas in the North of England as a CBT therapist, delivering condition specific CBT since 2016.

Historically I lived and worked in Scotland where I had a private practice in Glasgow. I worked alongside the NHS in the treatment of young people, with schools and with groups that would find it difficult to access psychological care.

Before becoming a Therapist I had a long career working in Third Sector organisations and Charities. Dealing with organisations working with social deprivation, health promotion and those living with a blood cancer; this included running and facilitating support groups and working one-to-one with those struggling to come to terms with a diagnosis.

QUALIFICATIONS

I have a SOCTAS Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Group Therapy. I regularly undergo Continuous Professional Development training to ensure I am up to date.
